Wow! What a fun day we had today. After a few emotional bumps in the morning, it seems like everyone settled in really well.
Today we talked about the letter Pp, specifically about puffer fish. We learned that when a puffer fish feels threatened, he drinks lots of water and puffs up to twice his size! We also looked at the letter Ff for fish. The students are really picking up the basics of the workshop model. Since Laramie County School District #1 is embracing this model, these kiddos will be ready to rock-and-roll when they enter the kindergarten classrooms.
During reader's workshop today, the students also began journal writing and reflecting about what they grew their schema about. Lots of students are picking up the word "schema," so don't be surprised if you hear it all around your house! Just a reminder--in our class we define schema as something our brain already knows about and when our schema grows we are learning :)
Writer's workshop went well, too. Our friend, Aden was happy to share about himself and his family. Most students are getting really good at drawing representations of their friends. If you are having your student draw people at home, remind them that we start with one head, one body, two arms, and two legs. This will help the students grasp a sense of self. We also do this every morning when the students sign in.
Thank you again for allowing me to work with your children. I have such a great time every day and it warms my heart when I can see that they are learning so much. I know we haven't had a lot of time to chat, but if there is anything special I need to know about your child PLEASE let me know--I hope your student is having as much fun as I am having!
I will also be sending notes home next Monday for a pre-scheduled conference time--PLEASE let me know if you have a preference for time before then. I can meet before 8:00 AM and after 11:30 AM. Can't wait to show you all your child is doing!
